Torel Avantgarde: A Boutique Escape on the Douro River
If you’re looking for a place to stay in Porto that feels as memorable as the city itself, Torel Avantgarde delivers. This 5-star boutique hotel sits right on the Douro River, and it’s part of the Torel Boutiques collection, known for properties with distinct character and a strong sense of place. We loved our time here, and it quickly became one of our favorite stays in Portugal. For more on the city itself, check out our full Porto Guide.
Hotel Setting, Lobby Design & First Impressions
Torel Avantgarde is gorgeous from the moment you arrive. The hotel makes the most of its riverside location, and nowhere is that more obvious than at the infinity pool overlooking the Douro. It’s the kind of spot that makes you want to linger with a coffee in the morning or a glass of wine at sunset. Beyond the infinity pool, the hotel also has an indoor pool and a full spa, so there’s no shortage of ways to relax after a day of exploring. The lobby and hang-out areas are beautiful, with faux flowers that hang from the ceiling and an array of art. It’s a very fun hotel in terms of design especially.
Practical Notes & Logistics
We had a rental car for our trip, and Torel Avantgarde made that easy. The hotel offers valet parking, and the process was completely seamless from drop-off to pickup. If you’re road-tripping through Portugal and worried about navigating parking in Porto’s hilly streets, this is one less thing to think about. This also makes the hotel a convenient home base if you’re planning a day trip out to the nearby Douro Valley, Portugal’s famed wine region — you can read all about it in our Douro Valley Guide.
Breakfast & Dining
Breakfast at Torel Avantgarde was a lovely experience. The spread included fresh fruit, eggs, pastries and more, plus a nice variety of coffee options. We chose to sit outside and take in the river views while we ate each morning, which set a relaxed tone for the day ahead.
For lunch on our first day, we ate at the hotel’s restaurant, The Digby, and it did not disappoint. The food was good and the atmosphere had a cool, stylish energy to it. We didn’t make it back for dinner during our stay, but The Digby is a popular spot with locals and guests alike, so we’d recommend booking a reservation in advance if dinner there is on your agenda.
The Room Design & Comfort
We loved our room, which was spacious and thoughtfully designed, with plenty of natural light coming in. The bathroom was a particular standout, as it had plenty of counter space of doing my makeup and the shower was nice. The room was well-appointed and comfortable, which made a real difference after long days of walking the city.
A cool note about the rooms: Each of the 38 guest rooms, 21 suites, and the Maisonette is a tribute to a specific artistic vision, inspired by the lives and legacies of avant-garde legends like Pablo Picasso, Coco Chanel, Alfred Hitchcock, Frida Kahlo, and Simone de Beauvoir. Our room was themed after a famous photographer (who I admittedly hadn’t heard of) and it was tasteful and modern.
Location & Walkability
One of the best parts of staying at Torel Avantgarde is how walkable it is to downtown Porto. We didn’t need a taxi or rideshare at all during our stay — we walked directly from the hotel to everything we wanted to see. This was one of the reasons I chose this hotel – I want easy access to everything from World of Wine to shopping to restaurants. If you enjoy exploring a city on foot, this location makes it effortless.
And with the Douro Valley just a short drive away, it’s easy to pair a stay here with a wine country excursion, which is exactly what we did – you can read more about that day trip from Porto in my Douro Valley Guide.
A Memorable Last Night
On our final night in Porto, we ended our stay with a really relaxing evening. We took a glass of wine around the corner from the hotel and watched the gorgeous river below as the sun set. A note about Porto: you are allowed to carry “open container” and drink alcohol in public areas if you so wish. Just please be respectful and responsible so as not to ruin it for others. If you plan on doing this, I recommend confirming with city laws to double check that it’s still allowed.
This moment we had sipping wine and overlooking the river was incredibly romantic and peaceful. It was a quiet, lovely way to close out our time in the city, and it’s a moment we still think back on.
My Verdict on Hotel Avantgarde in Porto
Torel Avantgarde combines a stunning riverside setting, thoughtful design, and a convenient location, making it an easy hotel to recommend for anyone visiting Porto. Between the infinity pool, the spa, and the walkability to downtown, plus its proximity to the Douro Valley, it strikes a great balance between relaxation and exploring the region. It is a true 5-star hotel experience that is worth it in my opinion, and I would happily stay there again.
