At Lily Travel, I only write about destinations I’ve actually visited myself in order to provide a firsthand experience, and Lagos was one of the highlights of a 20-day elopement and honeymoon trip through Portugal. I spent three days there in early June — perfect timing for beach weather without the intense August crowds — and came away with a genuine appreciation for just how varied and spectacular the coastline is.

1. Praia da Marinha
Praia da Marinha is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Portugal. The beach itself is small and sheltered, nestled between the same dramatic honey-colored rock formations that define the Lagos coastline. The water is remarkably clear, and the surrounding sea arches and grottos give it an otherworldly quality that sets it apart from just about anywhere else on the Atlantic coast.
One thing worth noting: Praia da Marinha sits a bit further from Lagos town center than the other beaches on this list — it’s closer to the famous Benagil Cave and the area around Carvoeiro, on the other side of Portimão. So plan accordingly and budget a bit of extra drive time if you’re based in Lagos.
Pro Tip: Praia da Marinha can get crowded in peak season (July–August). Visiting in early morning or opting for early summer, like early June, will give you a far more peaceful experience.
Whether you’re swimming, snorkeling, or simply sitting in the shade of the cliffs and taking it all in, Praia da Marinha is a must-visit if you have the time to venture a little further along the coast.
2. Praia do Camilo
Praia do Camilo was one of my personal favorites during our time in Lagos. Reached by descending a long wooden staircase cut directly into the cliffside, this beautiful little beach rewards the effort immediately. The rock arches and formations here are spectacular and the beach itself has an intimate, tucked-away feel despite being one of the most popular spots in town.
What makes Praia do Camilo especially memorable for us, though, was the meal we had perched just above it. Camilo Restaurant sits right on the clifftop with sweeping views over the cove, and it served us one of the best meals of our entire Portugal trip. They show you the fresh catch when you arrive and cook it to order — I had the grilled sardines, my husband had lobster, and both were absolutely phenomenal. Reservations are strongly recommended as it books up fast.
Pro Tip: Combine your visit to Praia do Camilo with a lunch or dinner reservation at Camilo Restaurant. The cliffside views paired with ultra-fresh seafood make for an unforgettable afternoon.
Praia do Camilo is also conveniently close to the Lagos town center – just a short drive, making it an easy addition to any itinerary. Just be prepared for the stairs — there are quite a few of them on the way back up!
3. Meia Praia
Meia Praia is a long, wide, gently curving stretch of impossibly soft sand that runs along the bay just north of the Lagos marina. There are no cliffs, no rock formations — just open sky, calm water, and as much space as you need to breathe.
We went early in the morning and had the entire beach practically to ourselves, which, for a stretch of sand this beautiful, felt almost surreal. We were able to walk to this beach from our hotel and in my opinion, this is the perfect beach to take your family to since the waters are calm and there’s plenty of space to spread out.
Pro Tip: Go early. Meia Praia’s convenient location near the marina means it fills up quickly in peak season. An early morning visit rewards you with calm water, soft light, and near-total solitude.
Meia Praia is also an easy walk from the marina area, so if you’re staying in or near town, you can reach it on foot without needing a car — a real bonus given how tricky parking can be in Lagos.
Final Thoughts on Lagos Beaches
What’s remarkable about Lagos is that no two of its beaches are alike. Praia da Marinha dazzles with its sheer geological beauty; Praia do Camilo offers drama, intimacy, and one of the best seafood meals you’ll find anywhere in Portugal; and Meia Praia delivers the kind of wide-open, unhurried beach day that resets something deep in you. Together, they make Lagos one of the most compelling beach destinations in all of Europe.
